by Calvin Kuefer

Currently in the United States there are two main political parties, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. While not every person ascribes to every belief of their stated political party, generally, the beliefs held are as follows:

REPUBLICAN PARTY

Republicans prefer a small federal government, only performing those functions that are specifically stated in the Constitution. They believe the federal government should provide for the defense of the country, mint the money and raise the military. They place the freedom and rights of the individual over that of the majority. They believe that taxes should be for the benefit of local government and are opposed to high taxes. Republicans preserve peace by strengthening defense. The strength of the nation’s economy is in free enterprise and individual and national prosperity. The role of the individual and the family is placed before that of government. Decisions about local matters are made at the local level.

DEMOCRATIC PARTY

Democrats believe the government should be focused at the federal level. They believe the federal government is empowered to do anything that is not specifically prohibited by the Constitution. They believe that the rights of the individual are less important than the good of all. Taxes should be increased and sent to the federal government to disperse for the benefit of the poorest. Democrats believe that money should be spent on social programs rather than defense. They believe world peace can be based on discussion and good intentions. Democrats believe in stronger business regulations and requirements as well as higher taxes. Democrats have been responsible for many of the social programs that place importance on the government’s role in care giving rather than that of the family. Democrats want more federal and state control over the quality and structure of education, particularly at the local level.

Each party believes that they are doing the best for the country. Let no one think that either one or the other is less patriotic. However, good intensions can still harm the country and its people.

The chattering welfare classes who believe that everyone owes them something are on the march. And what is worse is that there is no shortage of pandering politicians and media types willing to feed their delusional, me centered paranoia that they “deserve” something based on the mere fact that they exist at a certain place at a certain time and consume oxygen.

Every day for decades news about illegal aliens has crossed the wire. But one thing has changed in this news recently. It used to be that the news about criminals who jump the border illegally, steal identities, and skirt numerous other laws was dominated simply by the crimes they were committing. Now those stories still exist and are getting more play than ever (and rightfully so) but they are joined by a spattering of stories about how now these criminals are living in fear of being caught and punished and how they and their enablers are upset about it.

Well Halle-freaking-luiah!

What a novel concept! Law-breakers living in fear?

The immigration debate in America lately has degenerated to a lot of whining by those who are not happy mainly because they are here illegally and committing numerous other crimes to remain here illegally. All this is of course above and beyond their first illegal act of jumping the border. This whining is mostly about how they might actually be held accountable for their actions. Joining them in their noisy complaints are others who seek to tap into this group of poor and suffering (sarcasm intended) scofflaws for social and political power.

What always seems to be lost in the argument within a minute or two however is that these people are here illegally; that they are law-breakers. And why shouldn’t it be lost? After all, if illegal aliens and their supporters had to deal with reality the argument might not turn out in their favor.

Take for example Chappaquiddick Teddy Kennedy and his pandering to illegal aliens who were caught after a raid on a New Bedford factory. He likened the results to the “tragedy and human suffering” that ensued in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

On one hand he is right. Because the “tragedy and human suffering” that resulted from the raid, much like that of Hurricane Katrina, was mostly the result of a bunch of people that did whatever they wanted and then complained after their own decisions (like staying in New Orleans despite days of warning) caused them to suffer.

But Teddy Kennedy was not referring to the fact that like Hurricane Katrina, much of the suffering these poor souls were going through was of their own doing. Nope. That would require promoting self-reliance. And we cannot have that.

Instead he is focusing on the fact that those arrested were separated from their families and in some cases their poor little children. Promoting the victimization of these people Kennedy said, “These men and women had not harmed anyone. They were victims of exploitation, forced to work under barbaric conditions by an employer who knew that they could not afford to complain. Their children, many of whom are United States citizens, had done nothing wrong at all. None of them had any reason to expect that the Department of Homeland Security would decide to make an example out of them.”

What? To listen to old Teddy you might believe that these people were snatched from their homes in their native countries by the evil American corporate machine and chained to their workstations by maniacal slave masters only to be harassed by the federal government. But the truth is that each of these people who are in the country “illegally” made a choice to violate U.S. immigration laws.

Say it with me boys and girls – they are “illegal aliens”. They broke the law.

If we adopted the Teddy Kennedy approach to punishing criminals we would have to consider letting any criminal that violated any law off the hook if they have a child that might suffer should they be taken away and punished. What an insane concept.

In another case, the ACLU is still out and about harassing cities like Hazelton, Pennsylvania that simply don’t want people that have violated United States immigration law in their city. The ACLU is trumpeting the claim that it is only the federal government that can enforce immigration laws and that anyone else that should even think about helping to enforce immigration laws (by making life difficult for those that are in the country illegally) is somehow violating the Constitution or civil rights.

Even a cursory review of the Constitution shows that Congress is granted the authority to set immigration laws. And if the law says that someone who does not follow current immigration law is in the country illegally would not a city, state, township or other such government that did not ensure such laws were followed be aiding and abetting criminals?

That’s too complicated of an argument for the ACLU apparently. Again, those that broke the laws to get here are portrayed as helpless victims instead of what they really are.

It’s important to note that cities like Hazelton are not creating immigration law and are not violating the powers of Congress on this issue. What they are doing, as Dan Stein of FAIR neatly states, “is doing nothing more than setting rules for how employers and landlords in the city do business, which is precisely the function of local governments”.

Well good gosh golly! You mean to tell me that they want to make sure that those under their jurisdiction don’t violate immigration law by hiring people that hopped the border illegally? Yet another novel concept!

To take the ACLU’s approach to its logical conclusion would be to say that citizens have no responsibly or even authority to report or help prevent a crime because “that’s someone else’s responsibility.” Will the founding fathers please call their offices? Because this thinking is so far out in left field that I am certain they would get a good chuckle. And then possibly after that chuckle they might like to give the ACLU a good talking to with the business end of a musket.

Say it with me again folks – these are “illegal aliens”.

And ultimately all this cracking down on people that are breaking the law seems to be actually having an effect as evidenced by the attitude of illegal aliens in a San Rafael neighborhood. In that area illegals are so scared of recent ICE raids that they won’t even come out of their homes. But to listen to Principle Juan Rodriguez talk about what is happening it is “a war of terror in this community” perpetrated by evil Americans.

Ok, one more time folks, especially you Mr. Rodriguez – theses are “illegal aliens!”

Illegal aliens being too scared to even come out of their homes is a good thing as far as I am concerned. Eventually they will have to go back to where they came from if they can’t make it work for some employer that is looking the other way and make enough money to support their continued flaunting of the law.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the stories of human suffering that occur when people make choices that put them in a precarious position. Like when they chose to come to the United States illegally. But what we cannot lose sight of, lest we become a nation too afraid to actually punish those that break the law, is that these people have put themselves in this ugly situation willingly. Oh, and the fact that they are here “illegally” should not be lost either. Just wanted to remind you of that.

It would be wonderful if anyone that wanted to come to the United States could just simply come here. But the reality of it is that if such a policy were implemented America would be flooded with every conceivable person both good and bad, both productive and lazy, from every country on the face of the Earth. So we set limits.

And those limits and current immigration are hardly able to be called “racist” as some have implied considering that in 2005 the countries with the highest rates of legal immigrants were Mexico, India, China, the Philippines, Cuba, Vietnam, the Dominica Republic, and Korea (source: Office of Immigration Statistics). In fact you have to go to number ten on the list to find a country that is predominantly “white” and that is the Ukraine.

Hey, I know that people want to come to America. It’s a great place. And I also know that there are many politicians that would love all sorts of people to come here too for various nefarious reasons. But the facts are that there is a line and it is a line that the Constitution clearly spells out and that we are allowed to set and that is reasonable.

So if you want to come here get in line. Show us that you can respect reasonable and just laws and we’ll be happy to consider having you join us. Otherwise you probably do not have the “right stuff” that we are looking for to help make this country greater than it already is.

The last thing we need are more people who believe that they can create their own reality where they can do whatever they want and then blame everyone else for the decisions they themselves made. Trust me; we have plenty of those types already.

The days of a non-nuclear Korean peninsula are over. With troops from the United States bogged down in Iraq and ineffective multilateral talks with North Korea, the world is on track for another major disaster.

So, what can be done to confront this nuclear threat?

The current situation can not be addressed by the United States alone. It is my fear that the Republican majority in all branches of U.S. government will continue with the typical and ineffective go-it-alone strategy that has not won us the key support needed in protect our international interests. The international community is the only body capable of effectively handling the North Korean situation which has now developed into a global problem.

Global issues need to be met by the global community. This does not mean that the United States can not lead the way. Obviously, there will always be the need for someone to take the initiative, but it has to be done in a way that does not isolate us from the other global players and delay effective resolution.

First, in a global economy, it is necessary for voters in the upcoming election to cast their votes to bring a more Democratic balance into the make-up of our current govenment. Democrats would be more effective in diplomacy and can speak the international tongue. Whether you agree with their policies and beliefs or not, they are more likely to restore trust and a sense of humanity to our foreign agenda.

Second, if the international community is the channel of tough sanctions, China is the key. The country of China is an emerging dominate player in the Asian region and is also responsible for trade that equates to roughly 50% of North Korea’s energy and food imports. If China does not accept its new international role in a responsible fashion, then the world will continue in its struggle to suppress renegade dictatorships.

Finally, North Korea has already been warned in their efforts to develop nuclear capabilities, but apparently decided not to listen. I believe we should impose the toughest of sanctions and work with our allies to allow for massive refugee transportation out of North Korea. At this point, deadlines should be drawn up for an international force to work together in removing this dictator from power if president Kim Jong-il does not comply and agree to dismantle his nuclear program.

If you do not believe that a solution similar to the one I have just discussed then I would invite you to focus more on the consequences of not taking action. Iran is watching world events very carefully right now. If they seek weak international resolve and come away from this scenario with the conclusion that North Korea has in fact strengthened its global position, then what is to stop them from developing nuclear weapons? Iran would probably target Israel and North Korea would likely make a hit on South Korea.

In regards to a potential North Korean attack on South Korea, we already know that underground tunnels have been discovered to be dug deep into South Korean territory. The scary thing to note is that millions of people live in the capital of Seoul, South Korea, which is not very from the border with the north. If it is already assumed that some tunnels have not yet been discovered, what is to stop North Korea from detonating a nuclear weapon right under the heels of a major South Korean city such as Seoul? This would cause millions of people to suffer a horrific death. Another possibility to ponder is North Korea’s capability to transport weapons of mass destruction to our enemies whether it is Al Qaeda, Iran, Syria, etc.

Right now, the United States needs to continue its focus on immediate action in line with the international community, while at the same time researching preventative technologies that could strengthen our defenses within our own national borders. We have been warned, not the next question is whether or not we have what it takes to lead the international community and finally get something right.

I was born in 1945, so I lived throughout the Cold War…and, in the year 2006, and for all the young people out there, the Cold War, was a dangerous game of chess between two super-powers…the United States and the then Soviet Union pointing nuclear weapons at each other!

I was in high school, when the Cuban Missile Crisis happened, and that’s when Soviet ships steamed toward Cuba, bringing nuclear missiles to station them on Cuba, and President Kennedy stopped the Soviets, by placing a block-aid around the island! We were all scared to death that this was the beginning of World War III and the elimination of the human race from the Earth! The United States prevailed in this confrontation with the Soviet Union, as the Soviet ships turned around and went back to Russia!

*     *     *

“Freedom is not free.” Those are the words on a sign in the lobby at the Veterans Medical Hospital, in Albuquerque, New Mexico where I live. Millions of American’s have paid with there lives for peace and freedom around the world! Freedom is not free! When freedom is threatened…the United States must act!

We have all heard of them…the disciples of the devil…Hitler; Saddam; Noriega; Milosovic in Bosnia. The American people should be proud of the fact, that the United States has taken the lead for many years, in eliminating so much of the evil from the world!

Over the past decade or so, the United States have had to deal with the cowards, who call themselves terrorists! And, during 9/11 America was attacked for the first time by these cowards, who hide behind women and children! There is no spider hole deep enough to hide these cowards from the American’s who will hunt them out…one by one! The American people are fed up with them, and those who threaten and prey on innocent civilians!

The will and the strength of the American people will never be defeated by anyone…NEVER! Freedom is not free! I’m proud to be an American veteran!

With all the debate and discussion in regards to the 2008 Presidential race, I’ll throw in my two cents. At first, I thought maybe Mark Warner (D-Virginia) really does want to spend time with family and live a normal life. Yea right!

Last night I came to my senses…

I pondered, if I were a politician who had recently been testing the presidential waters for a year and worked hard to gather support and funds for other Democratic candidates around the nation, why give up on any hope for a political future.

As with anything in politics, candidates have to be calculating and realistic about their chances when it comes to being elected to office. I believe that Warner did intend to run, but soon found out that Hillary Rodham Clinton would be too formidable of an opponent in the primaries to overcome.

The one thing Warner realizes is that he still holds value when it comes to cracking the Southern and Western states. He can speak to various groups around the nation and appeal to the masses. His popularity as Governor of Virginia, a Republican stronghold, proves that he is extremely marketable.

Warner knows this and you are now beginning to see why he is stepping out of the race for the time being. The sooner he announces his plan to stay out of the primary fight, the more time Hillary has to plan and defeat other presidential hopefuls. The only other electable moderate Democrat besides Warner is Evan Bayh (D-Indiana). With Warner out, this allows Hillary to move to the center. She would then be able to chew Bayh up and spit him out in the primaries, leaving the most attractive moderate, Warner, to be drafted by to be her running mate in 2008.

So, for now, Warner will continue to speak abut his family and how much he has done to help get Democrats elected, knowing that if he behaves and rolls out the red carpet for Hillary, she may very well return the favor. This means the possibility of bringing him along for the ride into White House as Vice President.

Many of the leaders in our society are guided by unhealthy intentions. Instead of seeking to serve the people and heal our nation’s ills, their actions and decisions are primarily motivated by their desire for power. Many of the people running our country are run by their addictions to approval, sex, power and control. Unfortunately, few truly healthy individuals want to submit themselves to the necessary abuses inherent to our political races – the verbal abuse both given and received, the huge amounts of money spent, the integrity sacrificed through the concessions, lies and manipulations offered in order to win.

Our system of electing our officials is so corrupt that there is little possibility of attracting a person with a strong, personally responsible, loving inner adult self. This is not to say that none of our elected representatives are honest and caring. Some are certainly motivated by positive intentions but, unfortunately, they constitute a minority.

There is no training required in personal responsibility to run for office. Our leaders are not required to heal their dysfunctional aspects in order to become honest and trustworthy people. The prerequisites for political positions mostly include having enough money, enough powerful people behind the scenes, being male, and being white.

Our political arena is designed to attract wounded people who need approval and power in order to feel worthy and validated. Obviously, such a person, with little or no internally derived sense of self-worth and integrity, is very susceptible to corruption. As the adage says: “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” Power corrupts when a person is motivated by his or her desire for power over others, and few people have accomplished enough inner healing to transcend the desire for control over others.

A healthy person in office who is more concerned with serving the people than with getting re-elected could accomplish a great deal. Such a person was depicted in the movie Dave. In this film the actual president is in a coma and the White House officials, seeking to conceal the truth from the public so they can maintain control, put a look-alike into the president’s seat. Dave, however, is a man of heart, and rather than allowing himself to be controlled he sets about making necessary changes – cutting money where it is not needed and allocating it into more crucial avenues, like child care and the creation of jobs. He even takes responsibility for the corruption of the actual president and gracefully “dies” as the actual president is dying so the vice-president, a man of great integrity who was maligned by the power structure, could take over in his rightful place. The movie is, of course, a fantasy. Sadly, we would never elect a man of such integrity – a straightforward, honest, caring, and financially middle-class man like Dave. Our election process does not allow for this.

Revamping our election process would give people like Dave an opportunity to run for office. We desperately need people who care more for the common good than for their own popularity. We need brilliant, creative, honest and caring people to lead our country, but this will never happen with our present election system. We have incredible talent in this great country of ours, talent that could eliminate hunger and homelessness, and heal the internal wounds that create health problems, drug abuse, racism, violence and crime. But this talent is rarely tapped because running our country has been based on the earthly values of greed and power over others rather than the spiritual values of honesty, compassion and caring.

Unfortunately, neither our government nor most big businesses are based on the spiritual principles of compassion and caring about the common good. I have no doubt that if our government was based on spiritual principles we would not have the hunger, homelessness, crime, health problems, and drug abuse that are endemic to our modern society.

By: Rev Michael Bresciani,

The two party system in America has not been troublesome up to recent days for several reasons. Firstly, it was always taken for granted that the singular goal of each party was identical. That goal was doing what was best for the country. The only real difference between the partisans was how to accomplish that goal. The American public trusted that the goal was singular and pervasive in the minds of most of our statesmen and we trusted that they would work out the ways and means and the country would move forward at the end of the day. Why is this not the case today?

Why have the differences that could be used to stimulate debate and excite reason dissimulated. Now the differences are likely to create impassible chasms, picketing, upheaval, and riot. The answers are not out of reach but they are unlikely to be sounded much less heard.

Reason number one is that today we have more politicians than ever before but far fewer statesmen. If we are looking for a George Washington or an Abraham Lincoln in our ranks we will be disappointed. In fact just for looking you could be mocked and labeled as a sentimentalist who is wallowing around in nostalgia trying to rediscover the glory that was Rome but is of another day.

Another obvious reason is that the terms Democratic and Republican have been replaced in large part by the terms liberal and conservative respectively. Denotations have moved over for connotations in our perception. When speaking of America’s perception of just about anything that is the place where reality is given its walking papers. Evidence of this is prevalent in the importance we now place on an individual’s personal opinion rather than a discovery of the truth as it relates to us collectively. Fueled by the fall of personal responsibility and the rise of personal rights liberalism has a life of its own that emphasizes only our responsibility to get our own.

From Hollywood, media, academia, and pop culture, right down to the street, the tune we dance to is an anything goes personal freedom that can’t be questioned as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone else. Gee, sounds like anarchy eh? Is liberalism anarchy? Tacitly it is but don’t expect a liberal to admit to anything, which would be conservative.

Examples abound everywhere in American culture and attitude. Who would have thought the day would come when it would be less important to fight to flush out our enemies than to fight to flush our unborn children down the toilette. The Roe V. Wade battle has lasted over a generation and cost millions of lives but who is comparing that to a couple of years in Iraq and a few thousand lives? Again is this more of what makes the definition of incongruity? Perhaps it is closer to what makes the definition of ridiculous.

To avoid the tyranny of prosecuting those who don’t have the right theology or faith in God we decided to let congress make no laws regarding religion. The connotation of that concept has also dissimulated to what is commonly referred to as “the separation of church and state.” Even if we could live with the little twist to the actual law first presented in the constitution we cannot live with the connotations that have emerged and now cling to the original meaning like rocks in the pockets of a drowning man. Now it could safely be said that America has expanded on the concept of “separation of church and state.” Now other separations are espoused and coddled more blatantly than may have ever been expected only a decade ago.

How about the separation of government and morality, the separation of political affiliation and character, the separation of life and death itself, sound harsh? It is but that is covered by the separation of hearing and learning or even seeing and believing. In the end it all leads to the separation of right and wrong. Sadly even the question about right and wrong in America is now being put up to the question of “who cares and who doesn’t.”

In a recent TV commercial the theme is a retired person who wants to fly rather than play shuffle board or some other dull activity. The presumption is that America will go on as usual and portfolios and personal security will swell to meet us in our golden years. Being the liberated people that this generation is we will jump in our piper cub or glider and take to the skies. Oh don’t listen to those gloomy doomsayers who are predicting not so favorable weather, after all they are not “scientists” they are merely kooks, self recognized prognosticators or just plain loony. Between the immutable laws of reciprocity and whatever is left to good reason in this country it takes no prophet to see that we are more likely to sit down and cry than to stand up and fly.

Liberalism may seem like the way to go but history and even the most extravagant connotation of the word justice says otherwise. Sinking morality and rising world hatred of America is only the beginning not just of bible prophecy but of something far more fundamental and wholly irreversible. Put simply, which is probably far to complicated for the liberal mind, Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. Galatians 6:7
